Can I split a satellite feed for two boxes?

Question

I am getting a satellite dish installed and I want to know if i can use a splitter to take a feed upstairs,to an old sky box?

Our answer

No. Each satellite receiver needs its own connection to the satellite dish. You would need to run a feed from the LNB on the dish to the box upstairs, as well as one feed for each of the receivers downstairs.

Also note that a Sky+ and Sky+ HD box have two receivers, so need two feeds, not one.

Why can’t I split?

The set-top box needs to send special commands down the feed cable to the LNB on the satellite dish – these commands tell the LNB to change frequency and polarisation. Two boxes can’t control one LNB – They need their own feed. Most satellite dishes have four LNB outputs to support multiple boxes.
