Watching a third channel on a Sky box?

How do I watch a third Sky channel?

Question submitted online

We have a Sky+ box but when we want to record two programmes at the same time, we have to be watching one of them at the same time. We can’t watch a third channel.

When we try and turn over, a warning sign comes up telling up of a recording clash. My work friends say that this should not happen and we should be able to turn over.

Our Answer

I’m afraid your work colleagues are wrong on this one.

The Sky+ box only has two tuners, and it has two connections to the satellite dish. This means that it is only capable of getting two channels at a time.

The box is not capable of receiving a third channel. With the two channels you can watch one channel whilst recording another, or record two channels.

Your friends may be thinking of a situation where the Sky+ box is recording two satellite TV channels, and they use Freeview (built-in to the TV) to watch a third channel.

Alternatively, they could be thinking of Virgin Media – Some of their set-top boxes support three channels, not two as per Sky.

Should you have the need to record moe than two Sky channels – you could consider getting a second Sky+ box, and signing up to Sky Multiroom – that would give you the option to record four channels at the same time, should you desire!
