Do I need a new box for Top Up TV?

Question

I am looking to subscribe to top up channels for Sky Sport. At present I have a sky box, this is from 3 years a go when I had Sky. Would I require another box? I would like to subscribe on certain months as required by myself monthly.

Is this possible or have I been misinformed?

Our Answer

Top Up TV LogoFirst off, let’s look at what Top Up TV is, and what it offers:

Top Up TV gets live TV from Freeview via a TV aerial. It also offers access to four channels that aren’t offered on Freeview:

  • Sky Sports 1
  • Sky Sports 2
  • ESPN Sport
  • G.O.L.D (Evenings only)

As well as these extra channels, some Top Up TV set-top boxes (ones with a hard drive built-in) automatically download extra TV shows overnight onto the built-in hard drive giving you a few extra TV shows to watch “on demand”.

Top Up TV can be a good option for those looking to get Sky Sports from a supplier other than Sky. Here’s why:

  • You don’t need a satellite dish
  • You don’t need Broadband (or to change your broadband provider)
  • You don’t need to sign up to a contract

Sky Sports without subscription?

Sky Sports LogosYes – that’s correct. That’s something offered by Top Up TV, and something you can’t get with Sky, BT or Virgin.

You can sign up to Sky Sports 1, or Sky Sports 1 & 2. You can optionally also sign up to ESPN.

Can I get Top Up TV on a Sky box?

To answer the original question, no. You can’t get Top Up TV using a Sky box. Top Up TV uses the Freeview system and a TV aerial. Sky uses satellite TV and a dish. The two technologies are not compatible

To get Top Up TV, you will need a Top Up TV set-top box. At the time of writing, Top Up TV can supply you with a set-top box for around £30 which has a subscription card slot for the Top Up TV card. This will give you access to Sky Sports 1 and 2, ESPN and GOLD Plus.
