Freeview HD: No Channels Shown

Question

I just bought a Freeview+ HD digital TV hard drive recorder, and also have an HD ready TV. Freeview HD should be available in my area, but I can’t see any reference to HD channels on my EPG.

I’m a bit hazy on the subject of HD – are programs transmitted on different channels, or on existing channels?

Our Answer

First off, Freeview HD channels will appear on their own channel number. At the time of writing, here is the lineup:

  • Channel 101 – BBC One HD
  • Channel 102 – BBC Two HD
  • Channel 103  – ITV 1 HD
  • Channel 104 – Channel 4 HD

You mention that your TV is an HD-Ready TV set. This means that it does not have a Freeview HD receiver built-in, and so your TV will not be able to get the Freeview HD channels on its own.

You mention that you have a Freeview HD recorder. If it’s capable of getting Freeview HD, then this should be able to get the HD channels, and by setting your TV to the feed from the recorder, you should be able to get Freeview HD from the recorder.

To get Freeview HD

Just as a reminder, for Freeview HD, you need the following:

  • To be in a Freeview HD coverage area
  • A Freeview HD receiver (not just a Freeview receiver or an HD-Ready TV)
  • A suitable aerial. You don’t need a special aerial for Freeview or Freeview HD), but a damaged aerial, or an aerial pointing at the wrong transmitter won’t help.
