USB Port on Sky boxes for transferring recordings

Can I transfer recordings from a Sky box via USB?

Question:

“I have a SKY TV Digital Box and have a USB socket. As the SKY box hard-drive gets full really quickly, I would like to save programs on USB.  Please let me know if I can buy any USB to record my programs.(e.g. Kingston Technology 256GB USB 3.0 DTHX Flash Drive)”

Our answer

Sorry, but you can’t copy recordings from a Sky box using the USB socket. The USB socket on the back of a Sky+ box does not support file transfer, and before you ask, neither does the SATA port on the Sky+ box

The UYSB port on the Sky box is there to be used to help connect the Sky box to a wireless network – you can use some models of USB wi-fi dongle to get a connection to the Internet for access to Sky’s on-demand content

Running out of space?

The alternative, is to transfer your TV shows from the Sky box either to a computer (See how to copy Sky to a computer), or copy shows off using a DVD recorder.
